Welcome to Hawthorn’s House

by Jessica Riel

When he met his forever family, young Hawthorn already knew what he wanted out of life. As his lucky family-to-be approached his pen, Hawthorn began to binky with delight. “We knew he was for us,” says Kevin Mckenna, “especially since we have a soft spot in our hearts because he was the runt of his litter.”

Hawthorn, now Thorn for short, quickly warmed up to his visitors. “We could tell he was happy and energetic,” says Kevin. “He came over and sniffed us and allowed us to pet him. I stayed playing with him. He loved playing with me to the point I knew he would be right for me to take home; and I signed the adoption papers.”

Thorn has grown into a bigger rabbit, but at first he was still a small and young bunny. “When we first got him,” says Kevin, “he was very small. We had him upstairs and in a small pen so he could adjust easily to his new surroundings in his new home. Now he has a huge pen next to his cage.”

He has also learned to be more independent. “When he was a baby,” says Kevin, “he used to wait for me to get in or out of his cage. Now he goes in or out on his own, then he still does binkies coming out.”

Thorn’s favorite activities include binkies, zoomies, and discovering new heights to climb in his house. He also loves to play with his family. “Whether it’s chasing me or following me around the room, to playing hide-and-go-seek,” says Kevin, “he’ll always find something new to do. One time I was cleaning Hawthorn’s area, and he loves his hay, so I created a hay box so he can jump in it and play with his hay and if he wants he can play with his toys if he puts his toys in there.” A bunny who appreciates life’s simple pleasures; some of Thorn’s favorite toys include balls and paper towel rolls. Also, high up on Thorn’s list of loves are treats, including papaya, carrots, lettuce, and blueberries, and toys that dispense treats or secretly are treats in disguise as toys.

As a single bunny, Thorn enjoys being the center of attention. “He loves to show off and interact with people.”

May many more bunnies find happy loving homes like Thorn!
